Most origin of life research, in the historical approach, has tried to reconstruct the set of molecules on the early earth and determine what reactions took place that gradually led to living organisms. That effort has largely failed though much progress has been made in understanding environmental conditions on the early earth as well as in possible chemical reactions. There is a growing feeling that the necessary information to do such a reconstruction is likely irretrievably lost to history and can never be found. But there is also growing optimism that the ahistorical approach is not just more likely to succeed but may also be more important.
